Intense and fragrant, za'atar has an aromatic, slightly tangy, toasted taste, with the herbaceous notes of thyme and the citrus tang of sumac. A traditional Middle Eastern blend, it is deeply woven into the culinary cultures of Lebanon, Syria, Turkey and Israel. The recipe is based on thyme, sesame seeds, sumac and salt. Versatile in the kitchen, it is ideal with meat and fish, on warm bread with oil or butter, or mixed into yoghurt and hummus.
