Wooden Box of Lenten Sweets

Presented in an elegant wooden box decorated with views of old Genoa, these are Romanengo's Lenten sweets — an exclusive invention of our house, dating back to the early 1800s. The custom of preparing Lenten sweets in Genoa goes back to the 1500s, when the nuns of the convent of San Tommaso made simple almond-paste sweets with no butter, milk or eggs, observing the ban on animal fats during the 40 days before Easter. Ever since, every year before Easter you can taste the variety of these sweets: canestrelli scented with orange blossom water, diamond-shaped mostaccioli with fig and lemon jam, and marzipan shaped on wafer discs and filled with fondant sugar syrup in various flavours.
